what to do in nassau bahamas in one day

Going to the Bahamas but desire to experience Nassau without cruise excursions? I'g here to help! I went on an incredible trip with some of my closest friends from college as we celebrated our graduation. The beginning leg of the trip was a four night Imperial Caribbean Cruise that prepare sail from Miami – overall the cruise was a great bargain (~$100 a nighttime which included the pool, hot tub, entertainment, unlimited breakfast, lunch, fancy three course dinner, and 2am pizza…) but that definitely didn't mean I had cash to spare.

A Day in Nassau Without Cruise Excursions!

If yous've ever been on a cruise before though, you'll know this…it is very, very, very hard non to spend actress money. Cruises are sneaky!!! One large reason behind this is that cruise ports, where more often than not not just your prowl line stops, but ten other cruise lines as well, go the dreaded tourist trap. See below for my solar day through Nassau without cruise excursions, and my superlative 7 things to do on the island!

A Day in Nassau without Cruise Excursions

i. Make information technology into Nassau without buying anything

In Nassau, the capital of the Commonwealth of the bahamas, you basically have to walk through a quarter mile of people heckling you to purchase their tours and their wares and any else before you lot get from the prowl port to the actual city. Practice not buy into information technology! It's a trap! Anything you purchase before you lot go into the actual town is a rip-off, and those cute wood workings? They were undoubtedly made in a sweat shop in Communist china, and then put your wallet away before someone sows you a tale about how their brother carved information technology from a palm tree that saved his life.

2. Queen'south Staircase

After the overwhelming entry into the metropolis of Nassau, we opted to visit the more remote Queen's staircase commencement. Located a few blocks back from the main street of Nassau, you have well-nigh a 10-15 minute walk from downtown through some more residential areas until you lot attain the site.

A Day in Nassau without Cruise Excursions! The stairs are at the end of a long corridor with high stone walls on either side, covered in plants. Because of the stone, it'south quite cool in hither and the perfect place to cool off from the unceasing Bahama sun. Also, considering of its more remote location, there are a lot less tourists and it's more relaxing to meander through the site.

Can you see the stairs at the very terminate?

People from Nassau too refer to the stairs every bit the 66 steps. They were originally built past slaves as a monument to Queen Elizabeth, then although this is a historical landmark just remember when you visit that it's also a landmark of the oppression of the Bahamian people.A Day in Nassau without Cruise Excursions!

The 66 Steps isFREE! Usually there is at least one person staked out at the top of the stairs giving gratuitous tours too, so make sure to tip!

iii. Fort Fincastle

This famous fort is located right at the superlative of the Queen's Steps, then combine your visits! It too offers the all-time viewpoint to come across all of Nassau. The Water Belfry right behind the fort is the highest point on the island. Fort Fincastle is unique because of its shape, as information technology is built to resemble a ship. It is $ii to tour here, and you need to bring small change with you.

iv. Grab a drink at Bahama Rock Cafe

Since you're here already at Fort Fincastle, terminate in to the Bahama Rock Cafe, located correct between the acme of the Queen'due south Steps and the Fort. It'southward beautiful, locally owned, colorful, and the drinks (and food!) are plentiful and cheap. For more details on my feel at Bahama Rock Cafe, you lot can cheque out my post on the best Nassau bars for a cruise stopover.

5. Drink a Kokosnoot past the Ocean

Okay, this one is definitely a tourist trap, but it'southward worth it!!! Who wouldn't want to encounter a coconut chopped open in front end of them and so potable the sweet and salty kokosnoot water out of it on a hot, blue mean solar day past the Bahamian beach?!

A Day in Nassau Without Cruise Excursions

Liz and I paid $5 total to share a kokosnoot from a stand up on the Bay Street walk from the prowl port to Junkanoo beach. Information technology was definitely enough for me as I loved the novelty more than than the bodily taste.

There are tons of people selling coconuts though, especially from stands along Junkanoo beach, so I'd say wait and don't purchase the showtime one y'all run into if you're looking for a cheaper deal! We were just too excited…

half-dozen. Junkanoo Beach

I wholeheartedly recommend Junkanoo beach because it is 1) the closest beach to the prowl port 2) free, and three) not too crowded. Believe it or not but a lot of the other beaches in Nassau are NOT costless, so don't go tricked into taking a cab ride across the island but to pay more than money to become to the embankment.

A Day in Nassau Without Cruise Excursions Simply walk due west downwards Bay street by the cruise port and y'all will end up with crystal clear turquoise water, kokosnoot and massage stands, soft sand, beautiful shells, and long piers to walk out and look at the water.

Junkanoo beach is besides connected to West Esplanade beach which seemed a piffling quieter. In any case, neither beach was too crowded or boisterous. We could've spent all day but staring at that water…

seven. Fat Tuesday: tiffin, drink deals past the beach, and dark life!

While Fat Tuesday might exist a chain, the Nassau Fat Tuesday didn't feel like it. With sea views (the restaurant/bar is literally over the sea), tons of locals frequenting it day and night, and amazing daiquiri deals, it felt very Bahamian. You can read my mail here nigh my experience with the Nassau Fatty Tuesday, including free drinks, afternoon lord's day break, and a night out!
