Song information [edit]

I always worked late at night, when everybody left and the phone stopped ringing. "I Want to Know What Love Is" came upwardly at three in the morning sometime in 1984. I don't know where information technology came from. I consider it a gift that was sent through me. I call back in that location was something bigger than me behind it. I'd say information technology was probably written entirely by a higher strength.

Mick Jones[5]

Written and equanimous by Mick Jones, with an uncredited portion (somewhere between 5% co-ordinate to Jones and 40% according to Gramm) by Lou Gramm, and produced by Jones and Alex Sadkin, "I Want to Know What Beloved Is" was the first single released from Greenhorn'due south album Agent Provocateur (1984).[6] [7] The song features backing vocals from the New Jersey Mass Choir affiliated with the Gospel Music Workshop of America, Dreamgirls star Jennifer Holliday, and featured keyboard piece of work by Thompson Twins frontman Tom Bailey.[viii] The choir also appears in the song'south music video.

"I Want to Know What Beloved Is" reached number one in the UK Singles Chart on January 15, 1985, displacing Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?", staying in that location for 3 weeks, and knocked Madonna'southward long-running "Similar a Virgin" out of number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on February 2, 1985. Information technology was Foreigner's first and only pop chart topper in either country, although the band had iv number i Mainstream Rock hits and a number one Adult Gimmicky radio striking in the US. This was the ring's tertiary of four number one singles on the Mainstream Stone chart. The song spent v weeks at number one in Australia and also hit the top of the charts in Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, and Sweden, peaking at number 2 in Switzerland and South Africa.

We did a few takes, and it was adept, merely it was all the same a bit tentative. And then then they all got round in a circle, held easily and said The Lord'southward Prayer. And it seemed to inspire them, because after that they did information technology in one take. I was in tears, considering my mum and dad were in the studio besides, and it was so emotional.

— Mick Jones on recording with the choir.[9]

The song has received positive retrospective reviews from critics, with Bret Adams of AllMusic writing: "Information technology's not difficult to see why information technology became Foreigner'due south first number one single. Its dreamy, hypnotic feel is due in office to Lou Gramm's soulful lead vocals and the New Bailiwick of jersey Mass Choir's background vocals."[6]

The song was also issued every bit a 12-inch single with a longer time length of vi:23. This version contains a slightly longer intro and an extended song chorus/fadeout ending. The single'due south B-side "Street Thunder (Marathon Theme)" is an instrumental track originally appearing on The Official Music of the XXIII Olympiad – Los Angeles 1984 and afterwards the ring'due south 2-CD compilation Jukebox Heroes: The Foreigner Anthology (2000).

Presently after Foreigner's unmarried topped the charts, the New Jersey Mass Choir released its own similar-sounding version of the vocal on an album that it also titled I Want to Know What Dear Is. The choir's unmarried peaked at number 37 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number 12 on the Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales chart.

"I Desire to Know What Dearest Is" was ranked as the number iv Billboard Hot 100 single of 1985.[10] It was the band's third Platinum single in the U.South.[11] and their first and only Gold unmarried in the UK.[12] It was certified Platinum in the UK in 2020.[12]

Originally consisting of 3 verses, a pre-chorus and a chorus, the song was extended with a bridge written by original songwriter Mick Jones specifically for Tina Arena's comprehend in 1998.
